This Day in Gaming 🎂
In retro news, I'm celebrating the 21st of the one that started it all, Monster Hunter. In 2004 I caught excited whispers and game mag glimpses of a waking giant on the horizon. The fuzzy intel received: Capcom would be releasing a Japanese-only PS2 game where one tracked and killed kaiju in epic battles of attrition. An impulse import purchase was made, and, about a hundred hours later, I managed to overcome a Fatalis-sized language barrier (and fangs and claws) to achieve victory in my first Monster Hunter of many.
Fast forward 20 years, and I somehow got to sit down for a chat with one of the key individuals responsible for my younger self's torment and triumphs, Series Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto. When I whipped out my original PS2 copy and explained the origins of how I became hooked on his franchise, despite such a hostile introduction to it, he was delighted—perplexed that I even attempted such a thing, but delighted.
Nintendo Switch fans can dive into the timeless Dragon Quest XI S (‑50%), a game that took eleven years and three console generations to perfect. Its final form even added a retro 2D mode as a nod to the original NES release. For something more chaotic, No More Heroes (‑75%) invites you into the offbeat world of Travis Touchdown, a beam katana–wielding assassin with a fondness for wrestling moves and anime collectibles.
Over on Xbox Series X, Resident Evil 4 (‑22%) brings the horror classic back with a full remake that even impressed Shinji Mikami, the original director. Meanwhile, NBA 2K25 (‑69%) delivers more than just slick b-ball . This year’s cover athlete was motion-captured dunking in Crocs. Respect.
PlayStation 5 owners can unravel the darkness in Alan Wake 2 Del. (‑39%), which Remedy pitched internally as “Stephen King meets Twin Peaks but on acid.” Gran Turismo 7 (‑30%) continues its legacy of precision, with some car models reportedly taking over six months each to replicate.
And on PC, Helldivers 2 (‑31%) has been lovingly called “Starship Troopers with mates” by its devs — and with good reason. Or, try The Last of Us Part I (‑56%), where every asset was rebuilt from scratch, even Ellie’s shoelaces.
