Prefer to read the written word on a over listening to an audiobook like some caveman? Me too. If you have a Kindle Unlimited subscription, you'll have access to millions of books, comics, magazines, and more. And yes, you can even get audiobooks too. Simply download the Kindle app on your Kindle device, phone, tablet, or other reading device and make an account. This can make it much easier to read a book instead of listen, without the hassle of lugging around a heavy tome or worrying about accidentally ruining your favorite edition. If you're considering a subscription, read on for everything you need to know about the service in 2025.
Does Kindle Unlimited Have a Free Trial?
Yes, you can try out Kindle Unlimited through their free trial. Once you've officially started your subscription, you'll have 30 days of the service before having to pay anything. Once that time is up, your membership will auto renew at $11.99 a month, but you can cancel any time before the 30 days is up to avoid payment.
What Is Kindle Unlimited?
Owned and operated by Amazon, Kindle Unlimited is a monthly subscription service where you can read and borrow over 4 million books, magazines, graphic novels, audiobooks and more. The catalog is obviously extremely vast, but they make it easy by separating genres, medium, author, etc. Everything from iconic graphic novels like Grant Morrison's All-Star Superman to autobiographies like Disrupting the Game: From the Bronx to the Top of Nintendo by Reggie Fils-Aimé are available. Most of these are included as a digital book or audiobook through Audible.
You borrow up to 20 titles at a time, and there is no return date. Magazine issues and subscriptions don't count towards this limit, so feel free to borrow those to your heart's content.
How Much Does Kindle Unlimited Cost?
Kindle Unlimited only has one subscription tier, unlike Audible which has a few different tiers with credits available. You can subscribe for $11.99 per month. It used to be $9.99 per month, which was a great deal, but honestly even this new price is worth it if you enjoy reading at a high volume. You can also usually get a bigger discount during shopping events like Prime Day or Black Friday if you're willing to wait to subscribe. Most recently Amazon offered three-months free for new subscribers, which is likely a promotion we'll see again later this year.
Where to Use Kindle Unlimited
Like I stated before, you can get access to Kindle Unlimited pretty much anywhere. The app is available on the iOS, Android, and Google stores, and of course you can download it onto your dedicated Kindle device or reading tablet.
I've also rounded up some recommendations of books that are available for free with Kindle Unlimited. Rebecca Yarros' entire Empyrean trilogy is available, as well as great thrillers like The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. The popular Dungeon Crawler Carl series is an excellent choice for any fans of the LitRPG genre, and there are countless cookbooks, biographies, art books, and even nerdy encyclopedias available as well.
As a big comics fan, I'd definitely recommend checking out Kindle Unlimited's graphic novel selection as well. Everything from manga and mainstream superhero comics to video game tie-in comics and indie masterpieces like Y: The Last man show that there's something for everyone. This service is one of the best ways to read comics online if you're willing to pay for a subscription.
