The Legend of Zelda Movie Artwork Shows Link Wielding the Master Sword

The Legend of Zelda fans have gotten their first look at the upcoming live-action movie's Master Sword, via concept art showing Link wielding the iconic blade.

The image comes from the film's clapperboard, posted online by director of photography Gyula Pados, which shows the golden Triforce and Link himself in full hero's garb. While we've seen photos of actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link already, we've not yet seen the young star wearing Link's green cap, or with any of his classic gear.

This concept art shows just that, and is being taken by fans as confirmation that the film will eventually show Link in his full classic costume, Hylian Shield strapped to his back, and in his hand: the Master Sword.

Possibly video gaming's most well-known weapon, the Master Sword here can be seen in the hero's hand, all shiny and newly-forged — nothing like its decayed appearance in the series' most recent game, Tears of the Kingdom.

The clapperboard also bears the word "Umami," which fans believe to be a codename for the movie's production. The images also come with a brief note from Pados — who initially posted the images to his Instagram account, before swiftly deleting them. Of course, the internet quickly took notice, and they are now being widely shared across reddit and social media.

"After 9 months we rap [sic] today," Pados wrote. "What an amazing crew! Thank you New Zealand!"

As well as photos of crew members presumably taken at a wrap party, Pados' gallery of behind the scenes pictures also includes on-set images, showing filming in the New Zealand mountains, in a forest location like the spot we saw leaked photos from previously, and in an area filled with bluescreens that looks to be some kind of desert. (Guess we're going to see the Gerudo, then?)

Intriguingly, one of Pados' images shows a childlike drawing of Link, Zelda and what appears to be a Kokiri girl. It's unclear if this depicts another character from the movie or not, though fans have taken this to suggest we'll see Link's forest brethren in the film, too.

Officially, Nintendo has only announced Ainsworth as playing Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda. On set photos, however, appear to confirm that Severance star Dichen Lachman will be playing Impa.

Officially announced in November 2023, Nintendo's live-action The Legend of Zelda project is being produced by the company's legendary Shigeru Miyamoto, alongside Avi Arad, former CEO of Marvel Studios. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' Wes Ball is directing, from a screenplay by Jurassic World writer Derek Connolly.

The Legend of Zelda is currently set to arrive in theaters on May 7, 2027, and fans expect to see much more of it later this year when Nintendo gets around to marking the Zelda franchise's 40th anniversary. Following a recent leak, Nintendo is also believed to be developing a Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for Switch 2.
