Long-time Marvel Winter Soldier star Sebastian Stan has clarified he knows nothing about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, as he worked on the film without ever reading the complete script.
“I know absolutely nothing about it,” said Stan in a newly published French-language interview with French Sunday newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche. “Because we didn’t have a script. We just shot scattered scenes. It’s another way of working, continuously, constantly evolving. The producers didn’t want us to read it in its entirety, to avoid journalists asking us questions. I’ve been following this rule for fifteen years, I’m used to it.”
Stan’s comments came alongside a passing reference to The Batman: Part II being another project he can’t speak about. It’s been subsequently reported Le Journal du Dimanche’s article misquoted Stan making a reference to his role in the film, and the article has since been updated.
It’s worth noting the fact Stan hasn’t seen the complete Avengers: Doomsday script, despite being a part of the film, is actually par for the course when it comes to Marvel’s tentpole ensemble blockbusters.
While specifics vary slightly, it’s been previously reported that only Robert Downey, Jr. and Chris Evans received a full script for Avengers: Infinity War – although Benedict Cumberbatch also noted at the time that he too had read the complete script.
In an oral history of Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame with Rotten Tomatoes, the Russos admitted that only one actor definitely saw the complete script for Endgame: Robert Downey, Jr.
In Stan’s words, being able to participate in projects of such magnitude while still retaining the ability to watch it later as a spectator is part of the “beauty of this job.”
It sounds like he’ll be spectating it alongside a lot of other people, though, with Avengers: Doomsday pre-sale tickets reportedly outpacing Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
